  • What defines a polyurethane?

    Polyurethane is any polymer—a large molecule of repeating structural units—composed of a chain of organic units, joined by urethane links. It includes natural and synthetic materials with a variety of properties. Polyurethanes are the most versatile of all the polymers and can be made liquid, rigid, pliable and stretchable, and can be spread, sprayed or molded.

  • How does polyurethane foam help fencing and decking last longer?

    High-density polyurethane foams used for these applications offer a low H2O absorption rate and moisture-resistance (water absorption rate under 1% by volume) that does not attract mold, fungus, rot or insects. And because it is designed for low maintenance, BASF high density foam can take varying temperatures and climates and maintain appearance.

  • Does using polyurethane insulation help appliances save energy?

    Yes. Polyurethane insulation offers extremely high insulation properties. In fact, in an Eco-Efficiency Analysis showed that If all the storage facilities, freezer chests and transport vehicles were insulated with polyurethane rigid foam at 60 millimeters thickness, they would save 16 times more energy than the energy used to produce the insulation—in the first seven days that the appliances are in service. After a year, the optimal thickness polyurethane insulation will save 1040 times more energy than the amount used to produce it.

  • What is Micro-Springs Technology?

  • What is 'memory foam'?

    ‘Memory foam’ is a polyurethane properly known as visco-elastic foam, or low-resilience polyurethane foam (LRPU). Higher-density visco-elastic softens in reaction to body heat. A lower-density visco-elastic is pressure-sensitive and molds quickly, returning to its original shape once the pressure is removed. 

  • Does the polyurethane used for bath and spa applications offer insulation?

    Yes. Polyurethane's superior insulation values maintain water temperatures, enhancing customer enjoyment while also saving energy. This performance is particularly useful in outdoor spas.

  • What materials are compatible with polyurethane adhesives for flooring?

    Polyurethane adhesives can be formulated for bonding to wood, expandable polystyrene (EPS), oriented strand board (OSB) or specific metals.

  • Where can polyurethane foam be found in everyday items?

    BASF Elastoflex® flexible foams, with Elastoskin® polyurethane coverings and Elastofoam® integral skin system can be found in seating for many of today's snowmobiles, ATVs and motorcycles because of their durability and high resistance to water. They also give designers the flexibility to create a wider range of grain, texture and color surfaces, all using a single, in-mold process.

  • How are spring aids using Cellasto® connected?

    The steel coil spring is located between an upper and a lower spring cup, which are inclined towards one another. This spring takes on the shape of an arc.

  • What is a high resilient foam?

    Pluracol® HR polyols by BASF are typically used to produce the most comfortable and durable cushioning for furniture and bedding applications. Pluracol® Graft HR polyols are polyether polyols containing co-polymerized styrene and acrylonitrile, which are filtered to allow for efficient processing through a wide range of equipment. Foams produced from these polyols can be made to pass California Technical Bulletin 117* smoldering and open flame tests.

  • How does polyurethane compare with latex?

    Latex foam is often marketed in the luxury bedding segment as a long lasting, highly resilient, highly comfortable bedding material. But Pluralux foam may be a better choice. Data shows that Pluralux foam exhibits excellent feel and resilience properties while outperforming talalay latex with respect to pressure relief, support, dynamic fatigue, tensile and tear properties. Unlike latex, Pluralux foam can be made to meet the California Technical Bulletin 117* flame and smoldering tests.

     

    Pluralux foam, made from Pluracol® materials, maintains a high level of performance in "comfort" products. These foams exhibit outstanding resilience, support and durability properties. They absorb and distribute energy to relieve pressure points. Pluralux foam is an excellent material choice in producing mattress cores or padding for the luxury bedding segment.

  • Where can thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) be found in everyday items?

    Elastollan TPUs can be found in animal ID tags, over-molded laptop computer housings, mobile phone casings, golf balls, golf disks, armrests, goggles and ski and skate boots, and many more! The robust characteristics of Elastollan make it a superior choice for use in many injection molding applications.

  • Are polyurethane elastomers versatile?

    BASF elastomers can be molded to almost any size, shape and texture. This makes them well suited to producing everything from wristwatch straps to molds for simulated stone and outdoor decking to retail store mannequins.
